Downeast Challenge

  • Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club (map)

The Marblehead Yacht Club invites sailors to participate in the owneast Challenge, an exciting overnight, full-moon, sailboat race of 100 nautical miles from Marblehead, MA to Boothbay Harbor, Maine starting on Friday, July 27.  This is a great way to get to Maine for summer cruising in the company of like-minded sailors.

The 100 nautical mile distance makes this a qualifier for longer races like the Marblehead to Halifax or Newport to Bermuda.  he event is open to all boats 26’ or over with lifelines, jacklines and pulpits, and with valid PHRF handicap certificates.

Boats without a valid PHRF handicap certificate must indicate if racing in spinnaker or non-spinnaker class, and provide information on boat design, largest headsail (in percentage of “J” measurement), type of propeller (fixed, folding or feathering) and, if in the spinnaker class, the largest spinnaker (in percent of “J”); Marblehead YC will provide an uncontestable PHRF rating.  lasses will include: PHRF Racing, Cruising, and Single/Doublehanded.

Additional classes that have 5 or more registered boats will get their own start.
